The union representing Windsor firefighters says they will be documenting any instance where they city’s new fire plan doesn’t work.

At a news conference Friday, the Windsor Professional Firefighters Association said Mayor Eddie Francis “rushed” into crafting an outdated fire plan for the city. Union president Angelo Gertsakis says firefighters will be documenting any instances where the model results in delayed response time.

"Under the Mayor Francis plan, quite simply, fire fighters arriving at a house fire may have to wait outside until enough fire fighters are on scene,” says Gertsakis.

On Dec. 10, Windsor city council voted unanimously in-favour of a new fire transformation plan. This plan includes the consolidation of three fire halls into two new buildings and the removal of one pumper engine. According to Francis, and Fire Chief Bruce Montone, the plan will improve response time and coverage under the provincial standard 10-10. This standard requires 10 firefighters to respond to a scene within 10 minutes of a call.

However, Gertsakis says the 10-10 standard is outdated. Gertsakis also called out the mayor for not including the public in the decision making process.

"Windsor residents and business owners expect and deserve a fast and effective fire department response model that is based on proper risk evaluation,” says Gertsakis.

The union will now put together their own fire plan and bring it forward to the public in early 2014.
