Windsor fire crews were called out to a vehicle repair shop at 1578 Howard Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters reported seeing heavy smoke and flames when they arrived at the Auto Hut Clinic. The fire was reportedly put out about an hour later.

Lee Tome, Windsor Fire prevention officer, says "There's extensive damage to the building. There were flames coming from the front of the building upon arrival."

The shop was closed at the time, and owner Bahram Mokhtary says all flammables were safely sealed and stowed.

He adds that employees have been having a hard time tracking down the owners of two vehicles that were in the shop for service, and others waiting on the lot.

"All the phone [numbers] are in the book there and all is burned, I can't even find anyone now."

While some owners have come forward, those outstanding are asked to call the shop on Friday at 519-977-0184 for assistance.

An investigation and the search for a cause continues, and the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office is involved.

Windsor police were also on scene Monday, in case the fire is deemed to be arson. No injuries were reported.

Damage is estimated at $350,000, but there is hope the building and the business within it can be restored.

"From a structural stability perspective, we believe the building is structurally sound. There's extensive damage to the interior," Tome says.
