Windsor’s elementary schools will have enhanced security by the time kids head back to school in the fall.

Both the Greater Essex County District School Board and the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board are installing video intercom systems for the front entrances of all schools.

“We’ll be gearing up shortly and installing all of the systems by September,” says Gary McKenzie, manager of risk assessment for the Catholic board.

Ten public schools already have security systems in place.

"What's new is that everyone will be doing it and all doors outside will be locked," says Sharon Pyke, superintendent of education for the public board. "We have some schools currently that have them closed or some have certain ones locked, just depending on if they have portables - those types of things."

The system has two-way audio/video communication from the main door to the office with an electric door release. Beginning this September, all visitors to schools will have to be identified and request entrance during school hours.

Even though visitors will be required to buzz in, Pyke says the new system doesn't change the inviting atmosphere of the schools, it's just a change in culture.

The cost of implementing the intercoms at schools is about $3,100 per facility. The provincial government announced $10-million in funding for the Safe Welcome Program in December to implement additional safety measures at all elementary schools.
