Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent -- the first for the region this season.

A disturbance from the southern plains states is forecast to track northeast towards the Great Lakes.

The latest indications suggest the low will follow a path across central Ohio Saturday to New England by Sunday morning.

Fifteen to 20 cm of snow is possible for the Windsor region, especially locations near Lake Erie.

Strong and gusty easterly winds will develop ahead of this system with reduced visibilities in snow and local blowing snow.

Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions Saturday and into Sunday morning.

Police are asking drivers to take their time while on the roads and to leave a significant distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

"The roads are pretty slippery you just got to be careful," says Windsor driver Walt Caplin.

In Windsor, 21 plows are moving snow on the major routes.

"Get your car off the road that certainly helps our drivers deal with the snow," says Mike Palanacki, Windsor Public Works spokesperson.

Salting and plowing of main routes will continue throughout Saturday night, after which time plowing of residential streets will begin at 6 a.m. Sunday.
