The building that houses Windsor's Downtown Mission is set to get a million-dollar facelift.

As Ron Dunn, director of Development and Community Relations at the mission explains, the building is in a state of disrepair.

"All of the brick is being re-pointed all around the whole building, if you look at the facade, especially around the back, it's in danger of falling. The building assessment report came back saying the chimney, for example, is an accident waiting to happen."

And so after months of planning the board of the mission announced Monday it plans to spend $1 million on their building.

All new electrical and plumbing will be installed plus a new elevator that can reach all three levels of the mission and the attached church.

Dunn says they have the money to cover the renovations, but adds any donations from the community will help ensure the mission can continue to help people in need.

The architect for the project says the work will begin this week and hopefully be completed by Christmas.

Settimo Vilardi of Archon Architects says, "When your focus is on people it's hard to spend the money on the building...part of the process here is that there was a lot of deferred maintainence that had gone on through the years and that catches up with you and you really have to spend the money in order to maintain the services and I think that's what's happening here is we're trying to do a little bit of catching up."
