Chatham-Kent police arrested a 25-year-old Windsor man after a high-speed chase, where the driver allegedly drove 90 km/hour over the speed limit and hit a police cruiser early Tuesday morning.

Officers on patrol say they saw a man driving his vehicle erratically westbound on Longwoods Roads around 2 a.m.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle.  The man apparently accelerated and was clocked on Grand Avenue East in Chatham driving 140 km/hour in a posted 50km/hour zone.

Police say the man failed to stop and turned right onto St. Clair Street where he continued at speeds of 90km/hour.  As officers tried to stop the vehicle, the man swerved and struck a cruiser.

The man made an abrupt turn in a parking lot where he again drove his motor vehicle into the side of the cruiser in an attempt to flee.

Officers surrounded the man and he was ordered to exit his vehicle.   The man locked the doors to his vehicle and refused to comply, say police.  Officers broke the driver’s window and physically removed the man from his vehicle.

No one was injured.  Total damage to the cruiser was estimated at $100.

The driver was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fail to stop for police and resist arrest.  He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
