The westbound lanes of highway 401 in the Chatham area have reopened after being closed overnight.

The lanes were closed due to a crash involving a tractor trailer in the area of Highway 40/Communications Road.

Police say that poor conditions led to the truck becoming jack-knifed and blocked the highway. A fuel tank was also ruptured requiring time to clean up the spill.

The OPP reported that the lanes had reopened shotly before 6 a.m.

The driver was not injured in the incident.

The crash capped off a busy day for regional emergency responders as a first tast of winter caused dozens of collisions on area roads including the 401 in Essex county.
