Walking and biking along Windsor’s riverfront is about to get easier.

About $150,000 in upgrades to the trails are scheduled to begin on Monday.

Gravel will be replaced with asphalt on a portion of the trail between Aylmer Street and the Bert Weeks Memorial Fountain.

City crews will also start building a trail at the east end of the existing riverfront trail near Hiram Walker. The first priorities will be building fences, grading and raising the grade to prepare for extending the trail from Moy to Lincoln Avenue.

"The riverfront trail is a jewel for our community," says Mayor Eddie Francis. "By upgrading an existing area and also extending the trail further, we offer residents and visitors even more opportunity to be active while appreciating its incredible views."

The city is paying for the improvements.

“Trails in parks have become increasingly popular,” explains John Miceli, Executive Director of Parks and Facilities. “Seniors use them for exercise; people cycle; and families walk together on a regular basis. The trail improvements will provide increased accessibility and connections to other parts of the city.”

All the work is weather dependant, but the trail from Alymer to Bert Weeks should be completed by late June and the Hiram Walker trail from Moy to Lincoln Avenue by the end of July.
