University of Windsor students and employees set a new record for mass screening for sexually transmitted infections.

Exactly 700 people underwent testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea by providing urine samples in cups.

The number crushed the previous national record of 516 set by Western University, but fell short of a world record of 767 set in Basingstoke, England.

Organizers ran out of free “I peed today” T-shirts, but participants still lined up Monday to take part in the record-setting event.

“The T-shirts ran out at 600,” says Judi Wilson, health promotion nurse in Student Health Services.“Students were still excited to be tested in support of the event.”

The event was intended to raise awareness of the importance of getting tested, reduce the stigma of getting tested and raise awareness of sexually transmitted infections and how to prevent them.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit will test the specimens and follow up directly with individuals as necessary.
