The strike at the University of Windsor is having major repercussions for the school’s 50th anniversary celebration next week.

A number of events have been rescheduled and have been moved to new locations. And over 20 other events, including a tailgate party and a concert are cancelled until further notice.

Almost 300 members of CUPE Local 1393 went on strike on Sunday. The union represents skilled trades and professional staff, including equipment technicians, carpenters and graphic designers.

Some of the outstanding issues are job security and outside contracting.

“We are waiting to see if there’s an opportunity to get back to the table,” says university president Alan Wildeman.

Now the Windsor and District Labour Council Labour council is getting involved as more university staff prepare to hit the picket lines if a deal can't be reached. The head of the labour council, Dino Chiodo, met with the university's president to offer his help in finding a solution to the almost week long strike.

“If we can, help bring discussions closer together to maintain viability of university,” says Chiodo. “Because no one wants to see a strike."

The university is also in negotiations with four other groups of workers, two of which could be on strike by the end of the week.

Campus police, parking services, clerical staff and operating engineers could be in a similar strike position on Sept. 16.

“You think they'd use every tool before they would go on strike and I think they are trying to," says Chiodo.
