Two young men are facing racing charges after Chatham-Kent OPP say they were caught speeding on Highway 401 in two separate cases.

The first incident occurred on Friday, just before 9:30 p.m. An officer observed a westbound Infiniti SUV near Charing Cross Road that registered a speed of 174 kilometres per hour. 

The 19-year-old male driver, from Toronto, was charged with racing.  He will appear in a Chatham court on June 3 to answer to the charge.

About four hours later, just after 1:30 a.m., the officer clocked a westbound Chrysler 300 near Charing Cross Road going 181 km/h. 

Police say further investigation revealed that the 21-year-old driver, from Gloucester, Ont., was a Class G1 driver, and that his driver’s licence was suspended two times. 

He was charged with racing a motor vehicle, driving while under suspension, Class G1 licence holder driving on prohibited highway, Class G1 licence holder driving at unlawful hour.

He will also appear in court.

In each incident, the driver’s licence has been suspended and the vehicle impounded for seven days.
