Highway 401 near Chatham Kent is expected to be fully reopened sometime Friday morning after a collision and tractor trailer fire resulted in the need for repairs to the highway.

Police say around 5:45 p.m. Thursday, a westbound tractor trailer lost control and hit the north side cement barrier which caused it to slam into the centre barrier.

The centre barrier was then pushed into the eastbound lanes and the tractor trailer caught on fire.

The driver did not suffer any injuries.

The highway was closed for a good portion of the evening to clean up debris.

The driver, Khaled Husni, 57, of Windsor was charged with careless driving.

Just before 9 p.m. the eastbound lanes of the highway were reopened, however the westbound lanes were expected to remain closed at Kent Bridge Road overnight for highway repairs.
