The rain didn’t dampen the spirits for the 59th annual Ford Fireworks over the Detroit River.

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered along Windsor and Detroit’s waterfront on Monday night to watch the spectacular show and just as the fireworks started to light the night sky, the rain started to come down.

While some people headed for cover early, the majority decided to brave the rain and many were not disappointed.

Some Michigan residents watched from the Windsor riverfront to take advantage of the view of the Detroit skyline.

The show also attracted residents from Ohio, and even Quebec.

The organizers behind the Ford Fireworks promised a slightly longer show, it was a minute longer, with new technologies. The colours of red, white and blue were predominant during the display.

The theme this year was Detroit! Right Now! to celebrate the economic and cultural rebirth of the Motor City.

Windsor police reported no major incidents downtown during the fireworks display.

But Detroit Police reported two different shootings that injured three people. Detroit Police Media Relations Director Michael Woody says a woman bystander was injured in one of the shootings, and she was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
