For a third straight day at Queen’s Park, the NDP have slammed the Liberals over documents related to the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway, and one analyst says it’s no coincidence it falls before Thursday budget delivery.

Political analyst Lydia Miljin says information obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Percy Hatfield couldn’t have come at a better time.

“There’s no new revelations here, but certainly the timing right before the budget does signal that the gloves are off,” she says.

On Monday the NDP claimed the documents show the Liberals knew non-compliant Freyssinet girders were installed in various parts of the Herb Gray Parkway.  Hatfield also says Glen Murray’s staff was aware of issues raised by engineers, which included recommendations to both, not install and to remove the girders.

Miljan says this is a sign the NDP will reject the Liberal’s provincial budget.

“Up until now the Liberals have been able to continue in government with the generosity of the NDP—it looks like the generosity has now diminished and they’re also gearing up for a campaign.”

In recent polls the NDP have dipped. As a result Miljan says Andre Horwath and company are trying to shine a serious light on the party. By bringing up issues with the parkway, she says the NDP are focusing on mismanagement and lack of trust within the party.

Recent spending announcements are leading analysts to believe this year’s budget will be a heavy spending one – something Miljan says the public doesn’t want.

“(It) doesn’t play well with a lot of the public right now given the serious financial difficulties were in.”
