The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board along with Unifor Local 2458 announced late Thursday that a deal had been reached for support staff across the board.

The tentative agreement still needs to be ratified by workers but for now the strike, which saw long delays at some schools, is over.

The agreement comes following a lengthy bargaining session in Toronto with the assistance of the Ministry of Education.

"We think what we got was a very good deal for our employees,” says school board communications co-ordinator Stephen Fields. He also says the contract is not a done deal.

"We are not completely out of the woods yet," he says

But the president of Unifor Local 2458 Bruce Dickie is optimistic his members will ratify the agreement.

"We arrived at a fair settlement based on the issues that faced the parties,” says Dickie.

On Monday October 17, 2016 roughly 370 support staff went on strike including custodians, secretaries, office staff, and maintenance workers.

Just last week Justice Kirk Munroe ruled in favour of the School Board and issued an injunction to stop striking support workers from delaying teachers for long periods of time before getting to class.

Talks resumed on Wednesday after the Ministry of Education summoned the school board to Toronto to meet with representatives from Unifor Local 2458.

Details of the tentative deal will not be made public until the agreement is ratified.

Union members will vote on the agreement on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. at the union hall, at 3400 Somme Avenue while trustees will be called to an in-camera meeting to consider ratification of the deal.
