A teenage girl is lucky to be safe after she was found cold and wet in a snowbank early Thursday morning.

The outcome might have been much different, had it not been for an observant passerby, who came to her aid.

“I was at the right place at the right time,” says Huber.

Huber was on his way to work Thursday morning as a chef at Street Help. He was walking along Erie Street when he noticed something in a snowbank. The closer he got, the more obvious it became; it was a person.

“I found out it was a young girl, about 14. I removed hair from her face, noticed she was conscious and called 911,” he said. “I took my coat off to make sure she was warm and waited for paramedics and police.”

Turns out, police were already keeping an eye out for a missing girl.

“Her parents had reported her missing,” says Sgt. Pamela Mizuno. “They woke up and she was gone from her house.”

So when the call came in, police and paramedics were quick to respond, arriving on scene within minutes.

“She was very cold, wet and she was wearing jeans and a winter coat,” Huber says. “She was aware I was there, but she couldn't speak.”

The 14-year old was rushed to hospital.

“I didn't understand how people could drive by and not stop. It was very obvious,” he says. “There was a guy shovelling snow, who didn't come over. “

Huber says he just did what anyone else would have.
