Windsor police Chief Al Frederick is calling the use of a Taser Thursday night in downtown Windsor, “a proper use of force.”

Taking to Twitter this morning via @WindsorPolice, Frederick is hailing the efforts of four Windsor police officers for their use of a Taser involving what they’re calling an irrational man.

“Recent use of CEW (Taser) by WPS officers was appropriate use of force (for) a difficult situation. Well done by all officers," Frederick said in a tweet.

Police say the incident took place outside the Dugout Bar and Grill, in the 300 block of Ouellette Avenue. Sgt. Matt D’Asti tells CTV News, officers made it clear the suspect was under arrest and made several commands to comply.

D’Asti says when the suspect began to resist, that’s when the Taser was deployed.

The 25-year-old man was put under arrest for breach of the peace.

“This is an example of excellent communication and attempts to de-escalate, consistent with the training officers receive," Fredrick said.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.
