A previously starved Windsor puppy is now ready to put his sad past behind him and start a new life in his forever home.

Reno arrived at the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society severely underweight at just 16 pounds.

Within days, he gained 35 per cent of his body weight and underwent extensive medical testing. Shelter officials say it proved that his condition was due to neglect and lack of food.

A Belle River man was charged under the Ontario SPCA Act with one count of permitting distress to an animal and one count of failing to comply with prescribed standards of care for an animal for Reno’s neglect.

Reno now has a new dad, Derek, and a new canine brother Jackson, who was also adopted from the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society. Derek’s name is being withheld for privacy and security reasons.

Reno’s formal adoption took place on Thursday.
