Plans for an $8 million sewer project that could mean economic growth and environmental protection for Lake Erie, were announced Tuesday in Leamington.

Federal and provincial representatives were on hand for the announcement, with each level of government providing $2 million.

The sewer infrastructure in Leamington, up to the gates of Point Pelee National Park, is getting an overhaul.

The sanitary sewer collection project will connect to the municipality's pollution control centre for treatment.

“Of utmost importance to this announcement, is the enviornmental impact it will have on our jewel, Lake Erie,” says Leamington Mayor John Paterson.

Algae blooms have hit Lake Erie hard in recent years. Paterson says this project is just one way the town can ensure it's doing its part to keep the water clean.

Right now, septic waste is finding its way into the lake, fueling the problems that exist.

“There's been testing done. We know raw sewage (is) going into the drainage system and pumped right back into Lake Erie. It has to stop.”

Officials say there will also be an economic boost for the area.

Mike Makhlouf, who runs Freddy's Restaurant on Pelee Drive, wants to expand, but the lack of sewer infrastructure has put a stop to his plans for 10 years.

“This has been a big setback because we are maxed out to what we can do. This will open gates…. We can hire more and take it to whole new level.”

Makhlouf already has plans in place for a new 10- to 20- room inn, overlooking Lake Erie. He wants to begin construction as soon as possible so he can benefit from the tourists that flock to Point Pelee every year.
