The province is reversing its decision to close the Sarnia jail.

That's expected to take some pressure off of capacity at Windsor's new detention centre.

“The minister has been looking at the over capacity issue,” says Windsor West MPP Teresa Piruzza. “In response to concerns brought forward, the minister has determined it would be viable to keep it open to ensure appropriate placement of individuals and manage the capacity issue.”

Finishing touches are underway to the southwest detention centre, which is being built to replace the nearly 90-year-old Windsor Jail.

Last week Essex MPP Taras Natyshak, who is also the correctional services critic, was worried some of Sarnia's inmate population would be sent to Windso, exposing inmates and workers here to a greater chance violence.
