It's a new and more dignified way to serve clients at a food bank.

The Salvation Army is now offering a shopping-like experience.

In a new program that started Monday, users will have their intake done in separate smaller offices. Following the intake they will be directed to an area where the food is displayed on shelves and they will be guided to an area where they will have some choice in the foods they receive.

Food bank workers say the new plan gives clients more privacy, dignity and the power of choice when they visit.

Clients used to be served in a room two at a time. Following the intake process, they would receive bags of pre-packed foods. Workers say often some of this food was left behind before they leave the property if they didn’t want it.
