CTV news first told you about the rat problem in the city of Windsor back in July.

Now the town of Tecumseh is facing the same problem.

A viewer video shows a rodent scouring a parking lot Tuesday night on manning road near the expressway.

It’s a sight Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara claims is becoming more common, as rats look for food and a habitat. He tells CTV Windsor “they are seeing small colonies becoming bigger colonies in more than one area."

In an effort to tackle the problem, residents of Tecumseh will be required to use hard sided garbage bins starting January 1st, 2017.

It’s similar to the move adopted by Windsor in 2014. But the City continues to deal with complaints about rats.

McNamara understands the challenges in Windsor, but he fells “it will help control and reduce” the rat population in Tecumseh.

Hardware stores across Windsor Essex sell the bins, ranging in price from $20 to $90.

McNamara also wants commercial businesses to be on alert for rats, especially restaurants, and use plastic or metal bins.
