The public is being reminded not to assume fawns being found alone in the wild are orphaned.

Wings Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre says baby deer are left hidden and alone most of the day, except when they come to nurse.  The centre says these animals are not orphaned.

Already this year, six fawns have been taken in by Wings from concerned residents. Of those, only two showed any need of emergency care.

The public is encouraged to contact Wings or the Windsor-Essex Humane Society for assistance if they believe an animal is need of rescuing.

The best thing for the fawn is for it to stay with its mother.
