Residents are expected to protest Wednesday night, as Mayor Wayne Hurst updates the citizens of Amherstburg at a state-of-the-town address.

Hurst will host the address at the Verdi Club at 6:30 p.m., where he is expected to speak about the future and the town’s mangled finances.

According to Amherstburg’s CAO, Mike Phipps, the town’s debt has reached a whopping $44-million.

Some residents who are upset that the town is not receiving a provincial audit are expected to protest the event. The Liberal government has stated they will instead conduct a financial management and practice review. This gives the Ministry of Municipal Affairs unfettered access to councillors, town staff and financial records.

An investigation into the town’s books was completed by the OPP Anti-Rackets branch after being contacted by Amherstburg’s chief of police in 2013. The investigation looked into allegations of criminal wrongdoing, which were ultimately dismissed by provincial police.
