Fair warning for fans of two-wheelers, Windsor police are on the lookout.  Police will be closely monitoring e-bikers and cyclists throughout the month.

Police say riding on the sidewalk, running a red light or blowing through a stop sign could mean a fine.

But cyclists seem to be taking the warning with a grain of salt.  Rider Brian Tucker, co-owner of e-bike retailer Scoot-A-Long, says, “Anybody who’s been around Windsor for more than half-an-hour has seen at least 10 bikes on the sidewalk.”

But Sargent Matt D’Asti says police are taking the education campaign seriously, “Some people may not be aware of all the rules and regulations associated with riding on the roadways.”

City Council recently passed a bylaw banning power-assisted bikes from walkways or pathways shared by pedestrians and bicycles.

Tucker says the new rules favour bicyclists, even though, he believes, they break the rules more often.  According to Tucker, “It’s a matter of unfair enforcement.”

An initial fine for riding on the sidewalk is $100.
