Students at the University of Windsor had the day off on Monday as the Windsor University Faculty Association (WUFA) held a one-day strike.

And there could be more time off for students.

At the rally, leaders with the Windsor University of Faculty Association (WUFA) say they are prepared to walk away from the classroom indefinitely if they don't receive a negotiated settlement.

While students aren't happy with missing classes, members of the University of Windsor Students' Alliance (UWSA) understand.

"Some of us are going to end up working here for the University of Windsor and if we don't have our rights to bargain for the conditions under which we work in the future, the line has to be drawn here," says Shaun Steven, a UWSA senator.

All classes, labs and and placements were cancelled for the day as professors, librarians and coaches took to the picket lines.

WUFA officials have said they want the university administration's bargaining team to return to the table with a mandate to compromise a reach a deal.

The administration implemented a contract during the summer without the agreement of the faculty association.

They have offered a contract with a two-year wage freeze followed by a three per cent wage increase in the third year, but WUFA is looking for a two per cent annual wage increase.

Am exploratory session with a mediator is scheduled for Sept. 23.

"We're all looking forward to the mediation session on the 23," says Anne Forrest, WUFA president.

University president Alan Wildeman did not wish to offer comment to this story.
