The Windsor-Essex Catholic School Board has hired 41 new teachers and they expect to have no teachers on layoff.

The new teachers include 24 secondary and 17 elementary, according to an update from executive superintendent of human resources Terry Lyons.

Last year, WECDSB had almost 70 teachers on layoff.

There are 12,985 elementary students enrolled and 7,284 secondary students. In comparison, at this time last year we were at 13,021 elementary and 7,271 secondary.

Given that we accept registrations throughout the year, the board expects that number in the elementary panel could be as high as 13,100 students.

The board says breaking even or seeing a slight increase is remarkably good news in an era when every board in Ontario, other than those in the GTA, are experiencing declining enrollment .

WECDSB had originally projected a decline of about 800 students.
