Frustration is mounting on the first day of construction for a new roundabout in Windsor.

Construction crews broke ground Thursday on the project in historic Olde Sandwich Towne.

The intersections at Sandwich, Riverside, University and Rosedale are considered dangerous and officials hope will a roundabout will make them safer.

A statue of General Issac Brock and Chief Tecumseh will be the crown jewel of the project.

"I think it's going to be beautiful” says resident Arvind Sharda. “In my opinion, this will be something prominent."

But some people in the neighbourhood are concerned about the project.

“It doesn't look good. There’s a sense of the apocalypse around here as access is basically being cut off" says Nick Papadatos, the owner of Nick’s Auto Clinic, a business that sits in the middle of the construction zone.

He's worried people will think his shop is closed and not be able to get to it.

“In the end, hopefully business will not hurt too much” says Papadatos.

He's not the only one with concerns.

Resident Amilcar Nogueira believes the project will gentrify Sandwich Towne rather than address other issues like crime and poverty.

“I’m skeptical of how well it's actually going to help Sandwich Towne in general" says Nogueira.

But there is quite the discovery on the first day of construction.

Old street car lines were found buried beneath the rubble.

The roundabout will also be lined with a multi-purpose trail.

The project is set to be complete by September.
