New legislation introduced Wednesday by the province will provide a framework to help contend with invasive species in the Great Lakes.

The legislation will provide the Ministry of Natural Resources with the power to react to invasive species found within Ontario.

“This is a positive step in the fight against invasive species that will compliment actions already taken by the federal government. The importation of invasive species into Ontario is a serious concern," said Angelo Lombardo, executive director of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

The legislation means the introduction of new enforcement provisions and penalties.
