There’s new hope for Chatham's Capitol Theatre.

Municipal staff in Chatham-Kent are recommending the municipality take it over, in a report to go before council on Monday.

You may recall, in October of last year, St. Clair college officials decided to stop running the downtown theatre on King Street.

The college had been its manager since 2012, responsible for staff, performances and minor building expenses.

After a request for proposals, staff are recommending the municipality take over the theatre’s operations.

There were two other bidders for the Capitol Theatre – the Jones Group and Studio Black.

Staff suggest the municipality could operate the theatre with an annual budget of more than $540,000.

The municipality had been operating the theatre for several years after extensive renovations.
