The redesigned 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a change that might appeal to Canadians.

Chrysler Group announced a diesel option for the vehicle at its official unveiling at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The 3.0-litre, EcoDiesel V-6 engine has 240 horsepower and can tow up to 7,400 pounds. It's expected to get 21 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway in 4x2 models and 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for 4x4 models.

Chrysler communications manager Eric Mayne says the diesel engines are especially popular in Canada.

It is being called the first major expansion into diesel power in the U.S. by a mainstream SUV maker.

Three models of the new Grand Cherokee, including a 5.7-litre V-8 and a sporty SRT, are assembled at Jeep’s Jefferson North complex on Detroit’s east side.
