TORONTO -- A Liberal government backbencher wants to ban the door-to-door sale of furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters and water treatment devices in Ontario.

Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker introduced a private member's bill to crack down on what he calls aggressive and coercive sales tactics of some companies.

Baker says too many seniors and other constituents have been scammed at their doors by sales people, and calls it reprehensible that some companies have a business model based on taking advantage of vulnerable people.

Under the bill, any contract signed at the door for a new furnace, water heater or air conditioner would automatically be voided.

Baker says there would be fines of up to $2,000 for violating the ban on door-to-door sales, and the government would be able to add other products to the banned list in the future.

The non-profit Public Interest Advocacy Centre says Baker's bill recognizes the need to protect vulnerable consumers from making what could be damaging financial decisions based on high pressure and unscrupulous sales tactics.

Baker's bill will come up for second reading June 9.
