The CIBC Run for the Cure is helping in the fight against breast cancer, a local organizer says.

It's the largest single day volunteer led event in Canada in support of fighting breast cancer.

Sunday marked the 19th annual run in downtown Windsor and across the country.

"All on the same day, same morning across 52 sites across country in Canada, we're all celebrating at the same time which is amazing," says volunteer run director Shayla Barker-Klaczko.

Barker-Klaczko says more than 1,000 walked the riverfront in Windsor and more than $145,000 has been raised.

"So all of our funds raised go directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and goes towards research, grants, advocacy programs and education awareness."

Barker-Klaczko says the foundation continues to make progress towards one day finding a cure for breast cancer.

"Over the last 25 years that the foundation has been increased, we've seen a decrease in mortality rates as well as we've seen an increase in the technology and treatments for women as well."

At the Windsor event, almost everyone was running for someone or to keep a memory alive.
