The Greater Essex County District School Board has hired 52 more teachers because of a significant increase in elementary enrolment for the 2016-17 school year.

Enrolment to date for kindergarten to Grade 8 is 23,958, which is an increase of 395 students from September 2015 and 481 more than was projected by the board in April.

The board says this has made it possible to recall all teachers who were declared redundant at the end of the last school year, as well as the hiring of 52 teachers from the long term occasional list.

Most of the new students (381) are new to school and registered in JK/SK programs.
