The Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario is making a donation to local research.

Dr. Siyaram Pandey at the University of Windsor was awarded $12,000.

The money will support salaries for two under graduate researchers, who are working on a project that will investigate the effects of natural extracts and their effectiveness in treating the symptoms of Parkinsons disease.

The society estimates that 100,000 Canadians are affected by Parkinsons and everyday another 25 are newly diagnosed.

“In particular, Ashwagandha, which is a herb, which has been used widely for neuro degenerative disease but there is not much around its scientific validation and we are trying to see if Ashwagandha extract will protect brain cells,” says Pandey.
