Ontario Provincial Police say motorcycle fatalities are headed towards a seven-year high.

According to OPP, 25 motorcyclists and one passenger have died on provincial roadways this year and with two months remaining in the motorcycle season, officials are concerned.

“We are relying on motorcyclists and the motoring public to work with us and join in our efforts to keep motorcycling safe. The solution is simple: ride and drive within the law", said OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair.

Since 2008, there have been 175 motorcycle deaths on OPP patrolled roads. Of these, speed was a factor in 43, loss of control in 29, alcohol in 21, failing to yield in 20 and inattention in 18 of the deaths.

OPP say another driver’s actions are far too often a factor in motorcycle crashes. This was the case in 50 fatalities, where the motorcyclist was driving properly

Officials hope these statistics will help raise awareness and in turn fatalities on area roadways.
