TORONTO - About 4,000 parents of children in Ontario's elementary schools will be asked to advise the government on a new sex education curriculum.

One parent from every elementary school in Ontario will be able to provide feedback to the government through a secure survey about when certain information should be taught in schools.

The Education Ministry says a "current, relevant and age-appropriate" health and physical education curriculum will be introduced in classrooms at the start of the 2015 school year next September.

The Liberal government had introduced a revised sex ed curriculum in 2010 but backed down after complaints children would be exposed to some concepts too early.

The withdrawn curriculum would have taught kids about homosexuality in Grade 3, encouraged discussions about masturbation in Grade 6 and talked about oral and anal sex in Grade 7.

The government says the advice from parents will be considered along with research from earlier consultation and focus groups with students, teachers and others as it finalizes the new sex ed curriculum.
