An early morning close call between a motorist and construction traffic flagger has reignited safety concerns.

Windsor police say a motorist erroneously tried to drive around a construction worker – running over that person's foot at the corner of Wyandotte Street East and McDougall Street.

Flag person Kim Jacques says near calls are an everyday occurrence that could and should be avoided.

"People don't pay attention to the signs, they don't care that we're standing here,” Jacques says. “They don't realize we have families to go home to and they just do whatever they want!"

Sgt. Matthew D'Asti with Windsor police confirms the matter is under investigation and that charges are possible.

"It's a $110 ticket and carries a weight of three demerit points," D’Asti says.

The worker has been released from hospital with minor injuries, adding that construction flag persons have full authority to direct traffic.

"Those signs are legitimate, they are official and they are to be obeyed."

Meanwhile, flaggers say they just want people to take some extra time.
