There are calls for a cross-border study into air pollution in Essex County and the Greater Detroit Area.

Michigan Democratic Senator Gary Peters is asking for a joint American Canadian group to investigate the public health effects of air pollution.

Peters, in a letter to the International Joint Commission, says he also wants to see recommendations on how to cut emissions.

"Wayne County and Essex County residents deserve to know the cumulative impact that these multiple air pollutants have on their health. Residents in this region are exposed to a combination of pollutants and there is growing concern that this exposure is detrimental to their health, despite the area meeting individual pollutant standards," wrote Senator Peters in the letter.

Peters also claims Detroit has the highest rate of asthma in children for big cities in the United States.
