TORONTO - An expert on meteors has little doubt that one of the space rocks streaked across the southern Ontario skies yesterday afternoon.

Peter Brown of the University of Western Ontario says eyewitness accounts, video posted online and data the university recorded are all consistent with a meteor.

Dozens of Ontario residents took to social media or contacted the American Meteor Society to report either a bright flash of light or a loud rumble.

Dana Petrillo of Cobourg, Ontario says her house vibrated and she first thought there'd been an earthquake or explosion.

Brown says a series of microphones the university has suggest the shockwave originated around Peterborough.

He says the characteristics of the shockwave suggest the energy of the fireball was roughly equivalent to a few tons of T-N-T.

Brown also says it's possible some flaming fragments hit the ground.
