On Saturday, the public got a rare chance to go inside the newly built Southwest Detention Centre before the inmates move in.

Oddly enough, it was family time for the Minovski's.

"My husband jokes and says this is probably nicer than the lifestyle he has now, because they get three meals a day," says Jennifer Minovski.

Officials for the Ministry are proud to show it off to the public.

"They often see police officers in the community, firefighters, they don't get to see correctional officers doing their job," says Stephen Rhodes, Deputy Minister of Correctional Services.

The facility can house 315 inmates and has a total of 600 cameras throughout.

It cost $246-million and that's OK with some.

"As a taxpayer, you really see your money well spent." says Jack McConnell.
