The Mayor of Tecumseh is vowing to keep pressure on the provincial government to create a revenue stream to repair aging infrastructure.

Gary McNamara supports an idea to raise the HST by one per cent to help fix roads and bridges across Ontario.

The idea was discussed at this week’s Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference in Ottawa.

But it was quickly dismissed by Premier Kathleen Wynne, who said shewould not consider an idea that would make it harder for Ontario residents to make ends meet.

Wynne also pointed out the government has already committed to billions of dollars of infrastructure spending that should help in the coming years.

But McNamara, the former President of AMO, says Ontario municipalities need an extra $4.9-billion over the next 10 years just to maintain the current infrastructure.

“That is $3-million a day, every day, for the next 10 years,” says McNamara.

McNamara tells CTV Windsor he would rather see a one per cent increase to the HST than have property taxes go up.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens is also opposed to raising the HST. Dilkens says municipalities should look at other options.
