A Windsor MP is taking steps to help combat invasive species in the Great Lakes with a new private members bill.

Windsor West MP and NDP Great Lakes Critic Brian Masse introduced the private members legislation on Wednesday, in the House of Commons in Ottawa. The bill bans imports of invasive carp into Canada, unless dead and eviscerated.

The legislation also enhances the power of Canadian Border Services Agency officers by allowing them to enforce the law and increase minimum fines.

“This legislation is needed to strengthen the current regulations on Asian carp imports. It would take less than two dozen invasive carp to find their way into the Great Lakes for a population to become established, and they would do irrevocable ecological damage the ecosystems and local economies they help support,” said Masse in a statement.

The legislation will be fully discussed at a future date.
