Windsor police are looking for a suspect who allegedly used fake identification to steal various items totaling over $43,000.

The financial crimes unit began an identity theft investigation on Jan. 24.

The complaint told police that on Jan. 15 someone opened an account at Mappins Jewelry Store and fraudulently obtained a watch worth $3,600. 

He became aware of the fraud when the store contacted him to say his replacement watch was ready to be picked up.  He told them that he didn't open an account and he subsequently contacted police.

Officers told the complainant to contact Equifax to generate a credit report to determine the scope of the alleged identity theft. 

Police say the statement further outlined fraudulent accounts at Home Depot, Lowe's and Best Buy. There was an outstanding balance of $7,473 at Home Depot, $17, 926 at Lowe's, $9,200 at Best Buy, and $5,234 at the Brick.    

The total is worth $43,433.

Officers obtained video surveillance of the suspect.  He is also believed to be responsible for similar offences throughout the province.
