Food banks from across the province are benefitting from the hard work of a Windsor charity.

Fields throughout Essex County are brimming with fresh fruits and vegetables, as this year’s crop season comes to a close. At Lafferty Farms, all the watermelon orders have been filled, but tones of the fruit remain untouched – that’s when Plentiful Harvest comes in.

Instead of the food being thrown out, the charity will take the watermelons and funnel them local to food banks, Meals on Wheels and the Community Kitchen. But Plentiful Harvest is collecting more food than is needed in Windsor-Essex.

“There’s so many people who are hurting for fresh produce up the highway,” says Mike Turnbull of Plentiful Harvest. “Morrice Trucking and Lakeside Logistics, they donated their trucks, their fuel. We were able to push up over 100,000 pounds of food up the highway.”

Food banks in London, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Toronto all had fresh Essex County grown produce to hand out to their clients.

“We live in such a wonderful community where we have an abundance of fruits and vegetables,” Turnbull says.
