For the first time since the strike started with their employees, the Essex County library board met as a group.

But board members were greeted by members of CUPE Local 2974 before Wednesday’s meeting.

The meeting was closed to the public, but library workers gathered for more than an hour outside, protesting peacefully while confronting board members.

Wednesday marked the 55th day of the strike by 58 library employees.

Many say they want to get back to work because they miss being with children, and socializing with patrons.

CUPE 2974 spokesperson Lori Wightman says they have collected more than two thousand signatures in two days, calling for the strike to end.

The key issue in the strike is sick time.

Wightman claims the union is willing to meet anytime to negotiate a fair deal for library workers.

The union has served the library board with a bad faith bargaining report through the labour relations board, which lawyers are reviewing now.

Library Board  Chair Richard Meloche tells CTV News he can not divulge the details of the meeting since it was closed to the public.
