Former federal NDP leader Jack Layton has been memorialized in Chatham with a tree planting in his name.

Provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath was in attendance to plant the blue marnolia tree in Tecumseh Park in honour of the late New Democrat.

“What better way to honour Jack than to contribute something to the community that everyone can enjoy?” Horwath said in a statement.

This is the second time in as many weeks that Horwath visited the area.

Layton died on Aug. 22, 2011 after losing his fight with cancer.
