John Revell, the city's chief building official, says the demolition crew on scene at the former GM transmission plant is preparing for a possible implosion of the smokestack on Monday.

Revell added that the demolition crew will be on site on Friday and through the weekend drilling holes into the base of the smokestack.

It’s hoped the holes will help bring down the smokestack located between Kildare Road and Walker Road.

He believes the implosion will happen on Monday, and if not then, the implosion will likely be put off until Friday.

On Monday crews tried three times to implode the smokestack, but the structure turned out to be stronger than expected.

The third attempt managed to drop the stack about four feet, but steel lining the exterior of the smokestack kept the it standing.

However, it is now on a slight angle.
