The union representing 55 workers employed at the Waterfront Hotel is officially in a legal strike position as of Thursday, but won’t be headed to the picket line.

The hotel gave Unifor Local 195 a final offer, which included significant cuts to wages and benefits, but the union says it will not accept it as presented.

Unifor represents housekeepers, front-desk and maintenance workers— many making less than $15 an hour.

Both the union and the hotel were to meet in person Thursday. That never happened, according to union reps.

After speaking with its members, Unifor has decided not to strike this weekend as many big events are taking place, and the hotel is booked.

The previous contract expired in November, while the current proposal is on the table until June 1.

If an agreement can’t be reached, a strike could be in the cards.
