It’s going to be a steamy weekend in Windsor-Essex, but the health unit warns that some local beaches aren’t suitable for swimming.

Water samples taken on Wednesday at West Belle River Beach show a bacterial count of E.coli greater than 1,000. As a result, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has closed the beach, as it poses a risk to human health.

Elsewhere, swimming is not recommended at Cedar Island Beach, Hillman Marsh Beach, Lakeside Beach, and Sandpoint Beach.

Testing at Cedar Beach, Colchester Beach, Holiday Beach, Northwest Beach and Seacliff Beach returned low bacterial counts and have been given the all clear for swimmers.

On Pelee Island, a blue-green algae bloom continues to threaten water surrounding the town. Residents there are reminded to not drink any water that comes from Lake Erie or from wells, and to only consume bottled water.

Islanders also shouldn’t bathe, swim, cook or eat fish from the lake, while the algae bloom threat is in effect.
